The planet Uranus

Introduction

Uranus is the 7th planet from our Sun. It is a cold and windy place faraway from Earth. This is also my favorite planet because of its quirkiness.

If a text has underlineyes you get the point, that means you can hover over it to see extra informations (idk if it works on mobile devices though).

Oh also a disclaimer is that I'm not an expert on this or anything, I just want to write about my favorite planet. But anyways, have fun reading!

Discovery

Uranus was the first planet found with a telescope! It was discovered in 1781 by astronomer William Herschel. Before the recognition, Uranus had been observed many times, but was misidentified as a star.

Informations

Uranus is an ice giantgiant planets composed mainly of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium mainly made of "icy" materials such as water, ammonia, and methane. Because of it, this ice giant does not have a solid surface.

This is also the coldest planet in our Solar System, with a temperature of −224.2 degrees Celsius.

Uranus got its cyan-ish color from methane gas in its atmosphere.

Uranus is named after the Greek god of sky - Ouranos (it somehow became Uranus later on... now they all make jokes about it).

The planet has an equatorial diameter of 51,118 kilometers, which is four times wider than Earth.

With an average distance of 2.9 billion kilometers, Uranus is about 19 astronomical units (au)1 au is defined as 149 597 870 700 m, it is the distance between the Sun and Earth away from the Sun. It takes sunlight 2 hours and 40 minutes to travel from the Sun to Uranus.

Uranus currently has 28 known moons. All of the planet's inner moons appear to be roughly half water ice and half rock.

It also has rings. A small fun fact is that all the giant planets in our Solar System have their our rings, not just Saturn! They are just smaller and harder to see. Uranus has two sets of rings, they are also the darkest planetary rings in our Solar System.

Here comes the fun facts!

Uranus smells like rotten eggs... because its upper atmosphere is filled with hydrogen sulfide clouds.

Uranus is the only planet named after a Greek god instead of Roman gods like other planets.

The planet's moons are also unique for being named after characters from the works of William Shakespeare and Alexander Pope. Because of this, these moons are sometimes called the literary moons.

Uranus' rotation is weird. The planet rotates on its side with an extreme axial tiltthe angle between a planet’s rotational axis and its orbital axis of 97.77°(imagine its rotation as a rolling ball instead of a spinning ball like other planets).

Only one spacecraft has ever visited Uranus, that spacecraft being Voyager 2a famous NASA space probe launched on 20/8/1977..

Uranus in medias

Here are some medias that represented and humanized Uranus pretty well, I enjoy watching them (these medias are mostly made to educate kids but don't judge me pls)

Solarballs

This show's version of Uranus is kind of awkward and speaks in an Australian accent. Hates being made fun of by others because of his name. Is quite self-concious. One time he scared all of his moons away because he started a joke that he would crash into the moons to make more rings.

Toy Time Town

In this version, Uranus is a grumpy guy and never smiles. Is close friends with Neptune but she doesn't like him. His catchphrase is "Stop that!". He usually gets planets' names wrong (called Earth "Neptune").

Hopscotch

Idk bro just watch this video. He looks like a nerd who haven't showered in a few thousands years.
